Rail Team Leader. 

Are you an Engineering Team Leader looking for a new role in Edinburgh? You will be working with a team of technicians and reporting into management for one of the leading Rail manufacturing and Maintenance companies in the UK.

£33.71 umbrella rate. Overtime rate is paid on anything over 40 hours.

Job Function Summary:
Managing a team of employees to ensure targets for quality, throughput, cost and safety are consistently met.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Day to day operational management of a team to achieve KPIs on cost, quality, delivery and safety.
  • Lead team to operate in a safe environment ensuring H&S policy and PPE requirements are adhered to. Support health and safety initiatives, accident investigations and promotion of the use of near miss/ hazard reporting.
  • Dedicated and focused supervision on the units driving the required behaviours and performance. Being the initial point of contact for the team and liaising with other departments to resolve issues through the line call and TQ / QN process.
  • Informal management in regards to performance, attendance and behaviours of the team members including raising and discussing employee record entries. Be involved in departmental investigations.
  • Leads team to achieve SOP’s to production schedule and within process master time through team motivation, correct time bookings, completion of time trials and engagement of cross functional support where required.
  • Responsible for ensuring all tasks (eg. SOP sign off, oils, faults) for their team are completed at handover of the car to next station / process. Management and control of legacy work.
  • Leads team to strive for the achievement of zero defects through communication, training, route cause identification and implementation of improvements.
  • Clear communication to section leader, escalating issues by exception.
  • Minimise none value add time through planning, task allocation and development of team.
  • Responsible for team members and self-development to ensure competency are at the required level.
  • Together with section leader responsible for completing mid and end of year appraisals.
  • Manage tools and materials in an appropriate and efficient way (eg. Pick release, calibration, pre use checks, storage).
  • To develop, promote and adhere to departmental housekeeping and audit policy.
  • Support and co-ordinate continuous improvement activities.
  • Identifying the need for overtime and agreeing it with the Section Leader.
  • Deputise for and support section leaders as required with daily activities (team briefing, attend meetings etc.)

Essential Requirements
Applicants should be able to demonstrate all of the Essential Requirements listed below:

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team on a daily basis with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to deliver results on a day-to-day basis with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to support team development ‘on the job’ and formal training.
  • Experience of deputising in management/supervisory position.
  • A high-performance culture with a drive for continuous improvement.
  • Ability to follow laid down procedures without deviation.
  • Experience in testing and engineering including taking a lead and directing the team.
  • Attention to detail and the determination on quality standards are essential personal attributes.
  • Ability to interpret test results and to conduct failure investigations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the organisation.
  • Good literacy & numeracy skills and IT Skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and with others.
