The Technical Manager‘s role is to lead the technical team in areas such as engineering change, safety related defects, reliability issues, and performance (including delay attribution) on the passenger train fleets. The Technical Manager is required to provide technical expertise in order to support the investigation of root causes of both technical and safety issues on these fleets.
A key part of this role is to work collaboratively with other engineering functions, departments and the external Train Maintenance Provider that undertakes maintenance of the fleets.
The Technical Manager shall also drive efforts to simplify processes and practices within the engineering department.
Key duties include:
- Ensuring that safety and technical risks relating to the fleets are managed to as low as reasonably practicable;
- Line management of a team of five direct reports and contractors within the team, which shall include agreeing SMART objectives, conducing regular 1:1s and day to day management of the team;
- Undertaking risk assessments to support engineering change, following the occurrence of a safety defect, to assess the impact of a procedural/process change etc;
- Undertake reviews of Engineering Changes in SOROS and associated risk assessments and raise comments to be resolved by the proposer of the change;
- Collaborate with the Owners of the fleets on issues and engineering changes;
- Collaborate with the Train Maintenance Provider on the day-to-day delivery of maintenance, engineering changes, testing to support engineering changes, safety defects and other fleet issues;
- Work closely with the engineering production and commercial teams;
- Coordinate activities within the team to ensure efficient and effective use of resources;
- Assess the impact of changes to industry legislation, standards, best practice etc on engineering processes and procedures;
- Undertake investigations into accidents/incidents on company sites and safety issues/defects involving the fleets;
- Undertake technical audits on the Train Maintenance Provider;
- Provide input into fleet safety and reliability improvement initiative as required by;
- Lead on delay attribution and resolve escalations with the Train Maintenance provider or the relevant department within GA;
- Review and approve concessions and restrictions on the Class 745/755s;
- Develop business cases, technical reports, NIRs and other documents as required by the Head of Engineering;
- Attend meetings such as contract reviews with the Train Maintenance Providers, lease reviews with the Owners, Engineering Business Reviews and others as required.
What we are looking for
We are currently seeking a professional and optimistic colleague to join our team. The ideal candidate shall have qualifications in electrical or mechanical engineering and possess leadership skills, with at least 5 years experience in rail. The individual shall be capable of managing both internal and external stakeholder and shall exhibit exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
