Purpose of the position

To provide leadership, building an effective, cohesive and committed team which will maintain maximum safety, quality and production standards at all times.

Nature and scope

The Shift Managers report directly to the Assistant Plant Manager but have reporting duties to all senior managers. Their main duties are:
" Supervise the process and personnel on their crew to ensure achievement of production targets through the minimising of downtime and production losses etc
" Ensure quality standards are maintained at all times and to minimise spoilage to target levels.
" Ensure standard of equipment setting and operating achieves the required specification and product quality
" Ensure the shift team meets the plant environmental standards and targets
" Promote and be a role model for safety working practices and progress and promote SUSA culture among the Shift personnel
" Promote and maintain good industrial relations, safe working practices and good housekeeping in accordance with company and legislative requirements
" To effectively communicate key performance targets within their team and promote and support continuous improvement activities to achieve these targets
" Investigate/report equipment/process defects promptly to enable corrective action to be taken
" Responsible for timely and accurate accident investigations in accordance with company procedures

In these positions, Shift Managers are effectively managing the full production and engineering operation on a shift basis and out of a day hours are the most senior management representatives on site. It is at their discretion whether to take a course of action themselves on an important matter effecting production, equipment, quality, industrial relations, security or safety or whether to refer by phone for advice or authority from senior management at home. In doing so the shift manager can refer to the Business Continuity Plan for guidance.

Principle accountabilities

" Safely manufacture cans to the production plan within quality, efficiency, environmental and budget requirements
" Ensure adequate training, supervision and corrective feedback to the Shift Personnel for who they are responsible
" Develop Shift personnel by performing appraisals and critical competencies review and identifying a succession plant and train/develop consequently
" Apply the disciplinary and grievance procedure as per local agreement
" Ensure corrective action is taken, as required, for all equipment and operational problems/potential problems to maintain and improve the plant operation
" To apply safety contact management to promote and control safety management within the plant
" Ensure that the plants environmental legal requirements are maintained in shift to shift operations and to aid in achieving the yearly environmental objectives
" Ensure that Quality Control checks are carried out on shift at the correct frequencies and corrective action is taken in response to any non-conformity
" Have a full knowledge and understanding of the EHS and Fire policies.
" Ensure that all employees under their direct control fully understand their individual obligations.
" Ensure that any accidents, hazards, near misses or environmental incidents are captured and reported.
" Shall implement the emergency plan if the need arises.
" Participate in workplace inspections/behavioural safety programme.
" Promote consultation on all matters of concern with regard to environmental issues.
" Ensure that adequate arrangements exist, or are put in place, to cover the absence of those personnel with key environmental responsibilities.
" Ensure operational control procedures are appropriately implemented
" Ad hoc project work as required

Requirements for this position

" HNC in Engineering Discipline, preferably HND
" Problem solving / total quality skills
" Analytical skills to interpret numerical data
" A manufacturing background in a high speed, high volume continuous process
" Successful track record in man management
" Good understanding of modern lean manufacture technique - SMED, Kaizen 5S, Kanban, Structured Problem Solving, TPM/OEE, SPC, 6 Sigma etc.
" Proven record of achievement
" A management style heavily orientated to training and coaching
" Good computer skills - ability to manage via computerised data
" Working knowledge of Health and Safety work practises
