cockpit of helicopter The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), part of the Ministry of Defence, is helping to boost jobs in the construction industry by encouraging companies to get involved in the supply chain that maintains and repairs the UK’s defence estate.

The DIO has invited companies to tender for the repair and maintenance of airfields, army bases and naval sites (excluding main dockyards) and new building works up to a value of £3.93 million. The way in which the defence estate is managed has been evolving under the leadership of the Next Generation Estates Contracts team – their mission is to develop the most cost effective mix of estate contracts to meet the future needs of our armed services. By working more closely with industry and opening up construction tenders beyond the large construction companies that are the usual Prime Contractors, the defence estate benefits from the knowledge and expertise of the whole construction industry, whilst creating jobs in small and medium companies.

In March the invitation went out to businesses of all sizes to submit an expression of interest if they felt they could make a contribution to the supply chain. Small and medium-sized companies providing services such as building work, grounds maintenance, mechanical and electrical and civil engineering, catering and cleaning can join the process, as well as larger companies that may wish to bid as Prime Contractors. Specialist companies including energy management, recycling and environmental services are also being encouraged to participate. The contracts are in the South West, South East and Central areas.

What’s interesting about the call is the focus on innovative solutions and the very best providers, no matter the size of company. This is great news for the construction industry and recognises its talent and expertise. However, don’t hold your breath for job opportunities just yet as the contracts won’t begin work until the autumn of 2014.
