5 Interview Tips for Success

In Guides by Andrew Midgley

Being asked to attend an interview is a great feeling but one which can be filled with anxiety as well as excitement. Below, we highlight our top five tips for a successful interview.

Research the Company

Check out as much as you can about the company before the interview, this will allow you to see if it’s the type of place you wish to work and also gives you some information which you can use to ask questions.

The best places to look are:

• Company website, making sure to read the ‘About Us’ and ‘Services’ pages and articles published on the blog

• Company social media channels, to see the types of content they share

• LinkedIn profiles of the people who will conduct the interview to give you an idea of their background and current position.

2. Know the Role

You can find out a lot of information about the position you are applying for from your recruitment agency. Remember to read through any documents that have been sent to you and take the time to discuss the role in detail with your recruitment agency as they may be able to tell you more about the position.

Go through any job descriptions and highlight areas of expertise. Also note areas where you could improve. Knowing your weaknesses is just as important as knowing your strengths as it allows you to prepare your answers before you go in for your interview.

3. Memorise Yourself

We know this sounds odd but knowing your previous positions inside out is a useful tip.

This way you can avoid any odd pauses when asked about previous positions and what responsibilities you were given.

You can then start to practice answers to potential questions such as ‘How has your past experience helped you improve your skills?’ or ‘How did you handle tight deadlines in a previous role?’

4. Work out Travel Times

Working out how long it will take you to get to the interview is a must. Allow for traffic jams, buses being late etc. Remember: it’s better to be early rather than late, you are aiming to arrive relaxed and prepared rather than sweaty and stressed.

5, Be Yourself

Remember the three P’s when it comes to interviews:

  • Be Punctual
  • Be Polite
  • Be Part of the Team
